We have developed a curriculum with a good mix of academics and socialization for the four-year-olds. Students learn to write their name, upper and lower case letters in their weekly Alphabet Book, and to write numbers 1-10 in their number book. Our curriculum includes language arts, social studies (community helpers, holidays), science (butterfly garden metamorphosis, seeds, sink & float, magnets), math (numerical order, counting), computers (more than a dozen educational and fun programs), daily arts & crafts and painting, music program and cooking. We also have a large outdoor playground and sand box. The children have the following areas available each day: dress up and play house, kindergarten blocks, a large variety of manipulatives (puzzles and construction toys), play dough, and art materials such as crayons and markers.
Our Circle Time includes the pledge, a “Hello Song”, calendar, weather, “Weather Song”, “Days of the Week” song, attendance and daily lesson. After going through our program students are more than ready to handle a full day kindergarten class. |
The four-year-old classes give two presentations during the school year. They perform a Thanksgiving Pow Wow and an end-of-the-year play at their graduation. To celebrate the completion of the Alphabet Book in May we have “Pirate Day”. Children and staff dress up as pirates and gypsies and search for buried treasure under “X marks the spot”.
During our Community Helpers Unit we have visits from parents who are community helpers such as police officer, nurse and dental assistant. When we learn about doctors and nurses we have a special "Teddy Bear Day"; the children become the parents and their teddies are their children. Each child brings their teddy bear to different stations set up for tummy aches, broken bones, etc. This pretend play helps prepare them for possible future visits to the doctor or hospital.
We go on four educational and fun trips:
At a local farm the children play farm games, learn about farm chores, dress up in colonial costumes, feed the sheep and horses and make a craft.
We go to the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook for a hands-on demonstration of 19th century firefighting equipment.
Our trip to the Sweetbriar Nature Center in the fall has a rain forest theme and our second trip to Sweetbriar in the spring focuses on the five senses and a nature walk.
Children in this class need to be four years old by December 31.
